Esplanade Theatre Studio

If you had one hour left to live, who would you want beside you?

59:59 begins with an imagined countdown. As time runs short, ordinary moments take on a different weight. Seven dancers from Taiwan and Singapore weave together three stories about the fragility of life, tracing the ties between family, caregiving and loss. They lean on one another, give and receive weight, and pull apart, giving physical form to feelings that can be hard to put into words. Love can be found in the small things we do for one another and in the quiet moments we spend together.

Co-produced by Hsu Chen Wei Dance Company and Singapore’s Decadance Co, 59:59 was co-choreographed by Hsu Chen Wei and Rachel Lum. Over five weeks of residencies in Taiwan and Singapore, the artists drew on their own experiences to explore how families express affection, care for one another and say goodbye. As the countdown reaches its final second, the work brings our attention back to the time we still have and the people we can spend it with.
